David Byrne Radio City Music Hall - 2/27/09 Set List - Byrne-ing Down The House in a Tutu

Photo from Laura Musselman
Last night I saw David Byrne perform at Radio City Music Hall. This was my sixth second time seeing him live (unless I count all the concerts we both attended and I stood next to him at or sitting at the table beside him during a dinner in Park Slope). The last show I saw him at was my first outside show were it rained on us through most of the concert. Byrne even slipped and fell during his performance at Central Park's SummerStage.

It lightly rained before tonight's show but it was indoors. The concert was sold out or at least thats what it read on the marquee outside Radio City Music Hall. We walked up to the box office through the busy crowd minutes before the show started and purchased tickets in the center orchestra for face value. Easy enough . . . right?

Byrne came out on stage and chatted with the audience as his band set up. He opened the first of his two back-to-back shows at Radio City with his hit "Strange Overtones" off his latest LP. David was accompanied by a group of youthful dancers who did synchronized dances to all of his songs throughout the show. They leaped, galloped, rolled across stage in office chairs and even did acrobatics over Byrne's head.

He played a little over two hours and lot's stuff from this new album he collaborated on with Brian Eno entitled Everything That Happens Will Happen Today and one off My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and even a Catherine Wheel tune but when he performed his Talking Head classics it really turned the beautiful but stuffy Radio City Music Hall into a non-sit down venue as every one stood from their seats and danced till the evenings close.

Fun times indeed but what would really get my panties in a pinch would be a Talking Heads reunion. Come on David, Tina, Chris and Jerry . . . can't you all be friends? Dr. Kevchino is willing to sit down and do a session with y'all.

Leonard Cohen - NYC Beacon Theatre 2/19/09 He's Your Man and Then Some . . .

People were offering us fistfuls of cash for our tickets prior to entering the newly renovated Beacon Theatre venue. Leonard Cohen and his amazing band took the stage at 8pm and played till 11:11pm. This show marked Cohen's first time back in NYC in fifteen years and he was our man and then some. The seventy five year old Cohen moved around the stage as sexily as when he was young and spry, falling down on to his knees like it was old times. His voice sounded pristine and with a character most singers would die for. You Coachella attendees are in for a real treat! Absolutely amazing show.

*Cohen's band consisted of Roscoe Beck - Musical Director, Bass, background Vocals, Neil Larsen - Keyboard, Bob Metzger - Guitar, steel guitar & vocal, Javier Mas - Bandurria, laud, archilaud and 12 string guitar, Rafael Gayol - Drums & percussion, Dino Soldo - Keyboard, saxophone, wind instruments and vocals, Sharon Robinson - Vocals, The Webb Sisters - Vocals and gymnasts.

Handsome Furs Interview

With a unique electronic indie-rock sound, husband and wife duo Dan Boeckner (also of Wolf Parade) and Alexei Perry, better know as The Handsome Furs, made a big impact with the release of their album Plague Park. The Montreal natives recently released their second album, Face Control on Sub Pop records and are currently supporting the album with a worldwide tour. I had a chance to catch up with them for a few questions while they were on set for their latest music video shoot, for “I'm Confused.” Read the full interview here

Theresa Andersson at Joe’s Pub 2.6.2009

It would be hard to find a more impressive show than Theresa Andersson’s performance Friday night at Joe’s Pub. The Swedish born and New Orleans raised musician is a virtual one-woman band using looping pedals to record segments of each song which combine for an amazingly sophisticated sound live in front of the audience. There are a few musicians out there today using this method of performing but one can’t imagine anyone could make it look so effortless balancing a violin, a guitar, drums, percussion elements, and vocals and seemingly having so much fun in the process. Theresa’s spirit was contagious as she danced on stage with a big smile and bowled the audience away with her incredibly soulful voice.

She began the show and made an impression immediately with a stirring a cappella introduction using just a tambourine and followed it up with a few tracks off of her new album Hummingbird, Go! (which she recorded entirely in her kitchen). The brilliant “Birds Fly Away” was a standout song with its Motown feel along with a very catchy track entitled “Na Na Na” which shows off Theresa skills with looping and multi-tasking. As the mid-point of the show approached Theresa invited friends Davell Crawford, a legendary pianist and vocalist from New Orleans, and jazz-pop singer-songwriter Sonya Kitchell to join her onstage. The trio was fantastic in their harmonizing and jazzy call and response and the songs showed how far Theresa’s talents stretched. They covered a number of tunes such as “We Are One”, which was inspired by the recent presidential inauguration and a momentous cover of Betty Harris’s “Nearer to You” which was produced by Allen Toussaint. Theresa thanked Allen (who played the Pub earlier in the week) for his inspiration and knocked the audience out with her heartfelt vocals producing a range that should win her an epic title (maybe the Queen of Soul Loops?) someday soon.

The trio left the stage and the crowd understandably demanded more so Theresa stepped back up for a cover of Crosby, Stills, and Nash’s “Find the Cost of Freedom”. She ended the set like she began it, a cappella, but this time looping her vocal track producing a powerful crescendo calling Davell and Sonya back up for a climactic vocal improvisation which was truly dazzling.

The Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique turns 20

The Beastie Boy’s second album cover pictures a corner building, which at the time was Lee's Sportswear. A lot's changed in the Lower East Side in twenty years Lee’s turned into a great restaurant named in tribute Paul's Boutique (top right thumb) in the LES. A few years ago it turned into (to above pictured) The Three Monkeys.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Paul's Boutique the album B-Boy's re-released it in a multitude of formats, the first being a digital download available exclusively on February 3 at www.beastieboys.com (which has been completely overhauled and re-designed to commemorate the re-release). The basic 320kbps digital download with 3D interactive digital artwork will be available immediately upon order.

Lux Interior RIP

Lux Interior, lead singer of The Cramps, passed away this morning due to an existing heart condition at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California at 4:30 AM PST today. Lux has been an inspiration and influence to millions of artists and fans around the world. He and wife Poison Ivy’s contributions with The Cramps have had an immeasurable impact on modern music.

The Cramps emerged from the original New York punk scene of CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, with a singular sound and iconography. Their distinct take on rockabilly and surf along with their midnight movie imagery reminded us all just how exciting, dangerous, vital and sexy rock and roll should be and has spawned entire subcultures. Lux was a fearless frontman who transformed every stage he stepped on into a place of passion, abandon, and true freedom. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly.

The family requests that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.
