Coachella 2009 Line Up Revealed

I'd trade the lone Beatle in for The Smiths. No Moz solo for me thanks . . . but oh well. My Bloody Valentine, Leonard Cohen and Paul Weller are nice but I'm not really wowed by this years line up. What are your thoughts?

Dean & Britta Interview the Crystal Stilts

Crystal Stilts earned a fervent following with the 2008 release of their debut album, Alight of Night. Two of those fans, Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna, Dean & Britta) and Britta Phillips (Luna, Dean & Britta), even called them their favorite band of 2008. Veterans of the Kevchino.com interview themselves, Dean & Britta agreed to let us shirk our duties and talk to the band for us. Visit here to read Kevchino's first band on band interview.

Doug Randle's 1971 LP Re-Released in 2009

"A stunning collection of new songs for and about the time we live in," billed the text on the backside of composer Doug Randle's 1971 released Songs For The New Industrial State. In 2009, the same holds true.

Doug was, and still is, a writer, arranger, musician, and conductor with roots deep in the Canadian jazz scene of the 1950s. After a lengthy spell working in England during the first half of the 1960s, he returned to Toronto and took up an in-house position at the government sanctioned Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), where in 1970 he recorded his very own What's Going On. Commercially released by the short-lived Kanata Records label, Songs was an introspective look at ever-dominant corporations, the cutthroat advertising world, our consumer society, decaying environment, and his own personal condition.

The results crossed the epic studio creations of David Axelrod's Capitol output (or Spanish folk-rock fuelled Pride LP) with Free Design vocal harmonies from notable vocalists Tommy Ambrose and Laurie Bower (Billy Van Singers, Mutual Understanding, Laurie Bower Singers). Randle himself describes his long-forgotten efforts as, "my bitter and twisted Simon & Garfunkel songs," and though the lyrical content is indeed weighty, Songs' backing tracks successfully merge swinging sunshine pop and atmospheric orchestrations with a groovy backbeat performed by the cream of Toronto's heralded studio scene (Moe Koffman, Peter Appleyard, Rob McConnell, and Guido Basso to name a few).

It's an album like you've never heard, and one under the radar of even the most dedicated crate diggers.

The Morning After Girls Interview

Moving across the world, shuffling bandmates, and spending a few years under the radar would be enough to derail most bands. Proving the age-old adage, 2009 sees Sacha Lucashenko and Martin B. Sleeman of The Morning After Girls building on the band’s early promise and returning with a new album and lineup. The ever-gracious Sleeman recently discussed the band’s plans with Kevin Serra. Flashback - The Monks get reissued!

The Monks are a garage rock band, primarily active in Germany in the mid to late sixties. They reunited in 1999 and have continued to play concerts, although no new studio recordings have been made. The Monks stood out from the music of the time, and have developed a cult following amongst many musicians and music fans.

On April 14th, 2009 Light In The Attic is ecstatic to present the Monks recorded legacy through two lavishly packaged and lovingly researched reissues (available on CD, LP, and digital download): The Early Years 1964-1965 as well as their landmark studio album Black Monk Time.

"Super snotty attitude... by disgruntled soldiers? With monk haircuts, no less? My jaw dropped." - Jello Biafra

"It was just guitar, bass and drums but they made them sound like nobody had ever made them sound before.... the Monks were inventing music for themselves." - Ira Kaplan, Yo La Tengo

"You can hear their influence across the decades." - Colin Greenwood, Radiohead

Numerous period photographs (many unseen) and an extensive two-part essay by Canadian music journalist Kevin Howes (Rodriguez - Cold Fact, Jamaica - Toronto series) accompany both releases and tell the Monks story like it has never been told. Bonus material dating back to pre-Monks Torquays and up to post Black Monk Time 7"s are also included.

The 2009 Light In The Attic reissue of Black Monk Time and The Early Years 1964-1965 is the current manifestation of the Monks' crystallized vision. It means the world to us (and to the Monks; remember, "We're all Monks!"). As far as we're concerned, we feel that Monk music should be filed with pride alongside the Velvet Underground, Can, The Stooges, and Fela Kuti in the great record cannon in the sky. Long live The Monks!

Flashback - Certain General

NYC's Certain General have been performing music since the early eighties. They performed shows with R.E.M., New Order and The Cure. Shared a split French LP with NYC's Band of Outsiders. If the song on their myspace page "Emily" is any sign of what they are doing now I think we won't be disappointed.

The Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, RIP

The Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, RIP. According to the Ann Arbor News reports: "Famed rock-and-roll guitarist and longtime Ann Arbor resident Ronald "Ron" Asheton was found dead in his home on the city's west side this morning, police said.nAsheton, 60, was an original member of The Stooges, a garage-rock band headlined by Iggy Pop and formed in Ann Arbor in 1967. Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead early today in his Ann Arbor home. His personal assistant contacted police late Monday night after being unable to reach Asheton for days, Detective Bill Stanford said. Officers went to the home on Highlake Avenue at around midnight and discovered Asheton's body on a living-room couch. He appeared to have been dead for at least several days, Stanford said. Detective Sgt. Jim Stephenson said the cause of death is undetermined but investigators do not suspect foul play. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending. Asheton was born in Washington, D.C. His brother, Scott, who lives in Florida, is the band's drummer. In 2007, The Stooges reunited and released "The Weirdness," their first album in three decades. Asked how it felt to be back with The Stooges, Asheton told The News in an interview that year that it was "great to be back on the road."nThe Stooges were part of a 1960s music scene in Ann Arbor that included such bands as the MC5, Bob Seger, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, and The Rationals."
