Rodrigo y Gabriela, Greek Theatre, Los Angeles

On an August evening at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre; Rodrigo y Gabriela further blurred the defining line between Rock, Latin, and Instrumental Acoustic bands. Composed of Rodrigo Sánchez, lead guitar, and Gabriela Quintero, rhythm guitar: They took the stage in an eerie red light, with little but the moniker for their latest album 11:11, draped at the back of the stage.

The duo began their set with slow and melodic strumming; taking seats mid-stage in what looked like it could be a good-yet-ordinary show. This was nothing compared to what was in store for the audience that night. Picking up steam from their intro, the two rolled seamlessly into such acoustic anthems as "Hanuman", "Triveni" and "Diablo Rojo". Their melodic strumming building into faster and more intense fret-work, complemented by the rhythmic beats resonating from their hollow bodied guitars.

Highlights from the night included the audience of the Greek clapping-along in-time to some of the duo's best loved tunes; "Tanacun" and "Satori" especially resonated. Later in the show brought even more of an unexpected treat, in the form of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo; who joined in for an illustrious version of "Orion".

Rodrigo y Gabriela continued the evening of energetic and eclectic sounds; oscillating between their highly technical fret-work and make-you-want-to-clap-along-and-dance sounds. Every strum of the evening reverberating; further showcasing the Rod y Gab's embrace of teir hybrid sound that sets them apart from others, and gives a considerable edge to their sound. While their recordings are enjoyable; live, Rodrigo y Gabriela are truly epic...

Adaledge release video for "Lionest"

Brooklyn electronica Adaledge released a new video for their tune "Lionest" from there debut album Vintage Feelings on Triple Down Records.

Admiral Radley Bowery Ballroom 8/21/10

New York locals Hooray For Earth started off the show at The Bowery with a set of retro jams reminiscent of the eighties synth-pop. The band is on tour with Admiral Radley. Singer/guitarist Noel Heroux led the band in “Surrounded by Your Friends,” a catchy track of the band's six song EP. For the last two songs of their set, they brought out two ladies who shared vocal duties with Heroux and the band.

Admiral Radley is a Central Valley music project between Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch of Grandaddy and Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray of Earlimart. The band took the stage and launched into material off their debut album “I Heart California” which was released on July 13th of this year. They opened with the song "Ghosts of Syllables" and singer Earlimart frontman Aaron Espinoza (now donning a beard) led the show, sharing vocal duties with the reserved Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle, who shyly led the band with songs "I Heart California," and the waltz "I Left U Cuz I Luft U." Bassist/keyboardist and female vocalist Ariana Murray sang the lovely lullaby waltz, "The Thread."

At the end of the evening Aaron said, "This is an important announcement. This is the end of the show. We're all walking off stage now and you guys are going to make some crazy noise and then we'll come back for an encore." The crowd obliged and made some noise and the band, without ever actually leaving the stage, launched into a cover of "Everytime I'm With You" from the album Dark Night of the Soul, a collaboration by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse. The original song featured vocals from Jason Lytle and music by Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous. They dedicated the track to the late singer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous. They closed with the very Grandaddy-esque tune titled "Red Curbs."

New Sufjan Stevens All Delighted People EP

Sufjan Stevens just released a new EP entitled All Delighted People. You can pick it up on his Bandcamp page here.

His website reads: "The EP, All Delighted People, is built around two different versions of Sufjan’s long-form epic ballad "All Delighted People," a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simon’s "Sounds of Silence." Sounds delightful, yes! The song was originally workshopped (oh we hate making workshop a verb, but time is money!) on Sufjan’s previous tour in the fall of 2009. Other songs on the EP include the 17-minute guitar jam-for-single-mothers "Djohariah," and the gothic piano ballad "The Owl and the Tanager," a live-show mainstay (and Debbie Downer if you ask us; what’s it doing on a "Delighted" EP?). The full track list is available below."

All Delighted People:

01 All Delighted People (Original Version)
02 Enchanting Ghost
03 Heirloom
04 From the Mouth of Gabriel
05 The Owl and the Tanager
06 All Delighted People (Classic Rock Version)
07 Arnika
08 Djohariah

Dean & Britta Galaxie 500 shows

Dean & Britta are playing a tour of Galaxie 500 material. This is not a reunion; the original drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang will not be joining them for these show, but for fans that missed this band, these shows might be the best taste you'll get. Last night , they played a secret show at Park Slope's new venue Rock Shop. Tonight, they play a sold out Bowery Ballroom show with the Crystal Stilts. You can read an interview where Dean & Britta first met Crystal Stilts in a band-on-band interview they did for kevchino.com here. You can also check out an interview here with Dean & Britta around the time Dean's book Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance was released.

I saw a comment on another blog the other day about Britta Phillips and discovered an interesting shoe gaze(y) band she was in during the nineties called The Belltower. I always knew she provided the vocals for the theme song of the cartoon Jem but hadn't heard her earlier stuff. You can watch a video below of a song called "Lost in Hollow." In Bell Tower, Britta shared vocal duties with Jody Porter a New York City-based guitarist who later played with The Astrojet and ended up in the powerpop band Fountains of Wayne. The Belltower released only one LP entitled Popdropper in 1992. It was interesting to check out the development of Britta Phillips as a musician even as Dean takes us back to his musical roots with these Galaxie 500 shows.

Warpaint release The Fool

Rough Trade is excited to announce the release of the long-awaited debut full-length album from Warpaint. The Fool is set to come out on October 26th, 2010 via Rough Trade! The band weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like they're channeling something truly otherworldly, and mystical. Recorded in LA, The Fool was produced by Tom Biller (Beck, Karen O, Liars), with further mixes from Andrew Weatherall (New Order, Primal Scream, Bjork) and Adam Samuels (John Frusciante, Daniel Lanois). The Fool follows their Exquisite Corpse EP, released in 2009. The all-girl quartet from Los Angeles has toured incessantly over the last twelve months; with standout performance at CMJ and SxSW. New Music - Aphasia

If your in the mood for some beautiful instrumental tunes which sound like a very mellow Mogwai playing Twin Peaks tunes check out Aphasia.

Taiwanese instrumental post-rock quartet, Aphasia, has announced its first-ever Canadian tour, with multiple dates in Toronto, Halifax and Vancouver. Aphasia has released two full-length records, the latest of which, The Crocodile Society Of Aphasia, was released in 2008. Fans of acts like Mogwai, Do Make Say Think and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise or Sonic Youth, will find common threads in the music of Aphasia.

Reborn From Nipples Formed in the late 90’s, Nipples is one of the well-established bands in Taiwan’s indie rock scene. Leading by its core couple Yi-Jyun Wu (Guitar) and KK (Bass), Nipples is well known for its provocative sound and aggressive social attitude. Combined with the other brilliant guitarist Su, the two-guitar setup creates huge feedbacks and distortions, and its intertwined structure builds up angular soundscapes and rough textures; that’s the reason why Nipples is sometimes compared to Sonic Youth and other guitar-heavy bands. And indeed, Sonic Youth is one of the most influential bands to the band itself. After releasing two full-length studio albums, Nipples decided to go on a subsequent path. By changing the name to Aphasia, they turned their career to a new chapter. The New Line-Up Apart from their musicianship, three founding members of Aphasia are all involve in other music-related vocations.

Deerhunter & Real Estate Pier 54 Pics & Review

Tonight we braved the potential showers and headed out to Manhattan to check out the free Deerhunter & Real Estate show at Pier 54.

As the sun set over the Hudson River, New Jersey's Real Estate took the stage, playing some of their classics off their debut album and Reality EP. They played a few new tunes during their set including one they debuted at this show. On the newer songs, frontman (singer/guitarist) Martin Courtney's voice reminded me of James Mercer of the Shins and even the songs' structures had a more jangly feel to them. After their set, guitarist Matt Mondanile invited the audience to a late-night show for his other band Ducktails at Grasslands. The show also featured a DJ set by Deerhunter.

Atlanta's Deerhunter took the stage and really turned up the heat. I had seen Deerhunter many moons ago at a South Street Seaport show and was really disappointed. I realize now I was just disappointed with the muddy sound at that particular show. Wow, these boys can really jam. The band sounded great and so did the mix. You could hear all the nuances of sounds and the band's dynamics were amazing as the songs swelled between distorted blasts and clean and delicate instrumentation. Guitarist/singer Lockett Pundt sung a few tunes but Bradford Cox was a true showman, pulling off some blistering guitar sounds of feedback and samples while Josh Fauver's dirty bass sound locked in with Moses Archuleta's drumming. Bradford Cox is an amazing guitarist and performer. He kind of reminds me of a younger generation's Thurston Moore.

Toward the end of their set, the rain came down. They were rocking out on the song "Nothing Ever Happened" when bassist Josh Fauver lost his cool with a security guard who was harassing some people in the audience. From what I heard, the security guard was standing in front of the barrier, pointing out some people with video cameras or looking for someone smoking pot or something. Fauver threw a water bottle at him from the stage. The band went off-stage after the incident and security rushed Fauver into a tent backstage. The band came out after a few minutes and played an amazing encore of two or three more tunes. At the end of their set, Fauver shook hands with one of the security guards in an attempt to make peace and then the band all left the stage except for Bradford who stayed on, playing an intricate feedback guitar solo that lasted around three minutes.

I was really blown away with the band's set. I had written this band off from my prior show experience. Was I ever wrong . . . they sounded amazing at this free show. I've got some musical homework ahead of me catching up on their catalog.

Blonde Redhead 92yTribeca Review and Pics

We were invited to a free Blonde Redhead show at 92yTribeca tonight. When we arrived, I had thought we were at a Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy show instead because the main room was filled with so much fog it looked like a goth club. As the crowd enjoyed their drinks, the new album entitled Penny Sparkle was played over the stereo in its entirety. As soon as the last song on the record finished, the band took the stage and jumped right into the new single "Here Sometimes." Kazu's voice sounded great and the brothers Amedeo & Simone Pace delivered the musical goods along with an additional player on bass. The band sounded tight, the mix was amazing, the new songs were very atmospheric, similar to their 2007 LP 23. They played three or four more tunes off the new album, including one on which Amedeo sang while Kazu played keyboards, but then, they announced "thanks so much for coming" and left the stage. I had assumed it would be a full set, so I was a little shocked that it was over so quickly. But the flyer did clearly read "live preview event." I guess the key word here was "preview" and it was a great preview . . . I felt like they were just getting started, though, and I wish they would have played a little longer.

Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers at Brooklyn Bowl 8/5

Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers played an amazing show last night at Brooklyn Bowl. Shilpa and bassist Nick Hundley have really tightened up their sound with the addition of new band members, guitarist Andrew Bailey and drummer John Adamski. Andrew and John both have changed the sound of the band quite a bit, Andrew adding a frantic seventies rock vibe with his spastic guitar jams and John really gets into beating the skins adding more fury to the beat. Both members add more fuel to Shilpa's and Nick's already blazing sound.

At the beginning of the night, Shilpa came out with flowers in her hair and by the end of the night, after amazing jams and a few sips of Jameson, they were gone. The band played a bunch of new tunes from their upcoming second album as well as some old Shilpa classics and the fiery tune "Liquidation Sale" from her old band, Beat The Devil. One of my favorite of the new tunes is, if I'm not mistaken, called "Hookers." Shilpa sings "Click on me boys. Click on me. The RIght kind of music and the right kind of movies." The song has a moody down-tempo chorus where Andrew and Nick chime in on vocals on its intro. Another new one I've heard before was introduced by Shilpa exclaiming, "This one is about STDs" before starting in on "The Chelsea Clinic Physical." This track, which has tons of nice breaks and upbeat jams, got the audience rocking as Shilpa belted out "Do You Love Your Freedom?"

For the encore the band performed a great cover of Red Kross's "Neurotica," which is the first time I've seen Shipla step away from the harmonium for an entire song. She's already the hardest working gal in show biz and standing behind the organ but away from it she was amazing. Her powerful front-woman performance as she pranced around the stage and felated her microphone reminded me of Nick Cave from his early band The Birthday Party. Shipla Ray and her Hookers are hotter than ever!

SUUNS free Zeroes EP

Suuns have no doubt ingested a lot of art rock, the Montreal group's minimalist rhythms are equally informed by Joy Division, Suicide and Can, often wrapped in a noisy squall of droning guitars and pulsing synths. Add to this Ben Shemie's breathy, paranoid sing/speak, and there are times that it seems like Suuns are about to drive over a sonic cliff. But there's actually a great sense of restraint at play.

For a limited time, as we approach the release of Sunns' Secretly Canadian debut, we offer the band's 6-song EP as free, digital download.

They remind me of Clinic!

New Music - Y La Bamba

Portland, OR based Y La Bamba's forthcoming LP Lupon. Singer Luzelena Mendoza draws from both her strict Catholic upbringing as an only daughter of a Mexican immigrant and a debilitating illness that led her to fall away from her faith, to create what LA Weekly calls "Devendra Banhart-influenced art-folk with hazy femme vocals and traditional Mexican sounds." Y La Bamba has teamed up with The Decemberists' Chris Funk as producer for this haunting full-band debut, out September 28 via Tender Loving Empire. Check out this track below.
