Wow Interpol got robbed on their logo design money. It looks hideous! Trade the band an email for an MP3 of their new tune "Lights" above.

Atoms For Peace (Thom Yorke), Santa Barbara Bowl

Few artists (Thom Yorke being excluded) would be able to tour for a solo album "The Eraser" that was released nearly four years ago & have it sound fresher than the day it was released. This was in part to the nearly entire re-imagining of the album by the super-group comprised of Thom Yorke on guitar, piano, and funky dance moves; Flea on bass and appearing as a giant blue-haired smurf (Red Hot Chili Peppers); Nigel Godrich on guitar and keyboards (producer for Radiohead, etc); Joey Waronker on drums (from Beck's band); and Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco (from David Byrne’s band).

The show continued on, including the entirety of the album "The Eraser"; though it was a distinctly different to the album release. Songs like "Black Swan" and latter "Harrowdown Hill", now had heavy percussion and infections grooves which accompanied the melancholy lyrics, creating a sound that made band members and audience alike, dance and writhe. There were moments in the night where Thom was alone again on the darkened stage and gave the acoustic interlude of Radiohead songs including "Everything in It's Right Place" and "Videotape". These were minimalist renditions, in-between the melancholy dance-procession that the evening had aptly become.

Seeing Thom & Co live was well worth it. I hope they tour again so you can see what I mean. With any luck, this line-up will record live, to commemorate this sound...

Cursive - House of Blues, Hollywood
From the moment singer/guitarist Tim Kasher took the stage, the air was buzzing with a raw rock n'roll energy. Continuing on, they went into the title track from the album that they're currently supporting: "Mama, I'm Swollen", which further raised the bar again with quixotic lyrics like "I am the body and the blood - The earthquake and the flood". Sounding like a more recent and melodic Superchunk; the band was awash in refined noise, rhythm, trumpet, and Kasher's impassioned vocals. Every song seemed to bring more fervent applause from the audience than the previous song.
Covering a great emotional distance & getting toward the end of the set, Cursive lit up the place with their hit song "From the Hips", making the new fans in the audience electrified. Afterward, the same can be said of the seasoned fans, when they rolled into the title track from the album “Dorothy at Forty", bringing the the audience to the verge of an all-out meltdown. Closing out the night was the Big Black-esque, noise driven track "Gentleman Caller". It, as well as the entire night was passionately played and well thought out. I'd recommend checking Cursive out; A little noise is just what the doctor ordered...

Metric - Los Angeles 03/26/10

The show began on a darkened stage, only sprinkled with pinpoints of blue light. Shimmering, the frontwoman Emily Haines' keyboard intro and lyrics formed the perfect embarkation point for the emotionally textured opening, "Twilight Galexy". (from their 2009 album "Fantasies") Supporting their eclectic musical stylings; were guitarist James Shaw, bassist Joshua Winstead, and drummer Joules Scott-Key; which lit the aural path for Haines' lush vocals and quirky-polished presence.
As the concert built in intensity; the lights shone down, glowing of a thousand different shades of blue. Haines' lyrics seem to lend her voice to a generation's pain, joy, wit, and social relevance. The band oscillated between slower/dreamy tunes, and indie-pop gems like the well known "Help I'm Alive", and the catchy alt-hits "Sick Muse" and "Gold Guns Girls".
Haines flitted about the stage like the green-fairy painted in blue, while having unmistakable command of the stage and the audience's attention. The audience swaying with every move of the band, the evening was further punctuated by such witty tunes as "Gimme Sympathy" posing questions about the nature & even relevance of stardom with lines like: "who'd you rather be the Beatles of the Rolling Stones?"
Closing the night was another pinnacle from the 2003 album "Old World Underground"; asking the difficult relationship question: "how I miss your ranting - do you miss my all time lows?..." The ironically poppy, yet thoughtful "Combat Baby" had the Palladium's packed dance-floor bouncing in ecstasy until the last note of the night...
