I met up with Tasseomancy’s twin sisters, Sari and Romy Lightman, backstage at the Bowery Ballroom after a sound check for another music project they’re working on with Austra, whom they met at surf camp. We spoke of some differences between Halifax and Toronto (where they are from), the very moving history of their great-great-grandmother, how Edgar Allen Poe had an influence on their new record, and then the sisters sat down and took a brief quiz. I spent a fun-filled day with Matt Bauer and Dana Falconberry as we trekked around Manhattan and they both performed some of Matt’s songs live songs for Kevchino.com. Interview with James

We meet in an inconspicuous coffee shop near the show venue, our interview fit neatly between a much needed scone and cup of tea, and the band’s five o’clock sound check. There are already a hundred or more lining up outside the door. James are known for their sound checks, inviting a small number of fans in to witness the normally disregarded tour formality.Clearly, after a long absence from playing in the United States, though, the band is taking nothing for granted. Across from the microphone are long-time members of James, guitarist Larry Gott and bassist Jim Glennie. The two men possess opposite demeanors, yet once they get talking, they perfectly complement one another: Gott has a precise wit for details, his keen gaze obscured behind tinted glasses, while Glennie’s soft, youthful demeanor offers the emotional connective tissue between benchmarks in the band’s history. Laurie Anderson Interview

As an artist and musician, Laurie Anderson has been creating experimental music and innovative performances for over forty years earning her a reputation as a true renaissance woman in the arts. In addition to being an acclaimed violinist and inventing a number of instruments such as the talking stick and tape-bow violin, her song “O Superman” hit number 2 in the UK charts in 1981. She has collaborated with a variety of the creative world’s most notable names such as: William S. Burroughs, Peter Gabriel, Spalding Gray, and Andy Kaufman and in 2008 married long term partner Lou Reed. Her most recent piece, Delusion, is being presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music through October 3 as part of the Next Wave Festival and her new album Homeland is now available on Nonesuch Records.

M83 Interview with Anthony Gonzales

Anthony Gonzales formed the French electronic band M83, named for a distant galaxy, in 2001 along with Nicolas Fromageau (who has since left) and early on were compared to shoegaze bands like the Cocteau Twins. Since their first album in 2001, they have released four more, and their sound has continued to progress from spoken words with music to full-out singing and greater popular and dance sensibilities. Their most recent album, 2008’s Saturdays=Youth, mixed its 1980s film soundtrack quality with a blend of old and new. I had a chance to speak to Anthony Gonzales in New York during M83’s latest tour.

Handsome Furs Interview

With a unique electronic indie-rock sound, husband and wife duo Dan Boeckner (also of Wolf Parade) and Alexei Perry, better know as The Handsome Furs, made a big impact with the release of their album Plague Park. The Montreal natives recently released their second album, Face Control on Sub Pop records and are currently supporting the album with a worldwide tour.
